At the NRF exhibition in the beginning of the year, Sensormatic launched a new system called FLEX. They combined EAS antennas, digital signage, and visual marketing tools and placed them at the entrance of the store.
Sensormatic's person said: "What EAS equipment can do and should do is far more than just detecting goods and alerting store staff."
The task list of traditional EAS
In the past, EAS was only responsible for one thing: detecting whether the tags had been demagnetized. If they were not demagnetized, it would trigger an alarm; if they were demagnetized, it would allow passage.
This function will not disappear. Anti-theft will always be a necessity. The EAS hardware will not cease to exist; it will merely be redefined. However, what the industry leaders are doing tells us that the role of EAS hardware is changing.
In February at EuroShop, Checkpoint announced SFERO™ RFID Checkout. By integrating the RFID antenna directly into the checkout channel, there was no need to cut trenches in the floor or install additional wiring.
What are the benefits? The cashier places the goods on the checkout counter, and the RFID antenna automatically reads all the product information, while the EAS detection is completed simultaneously. There is no need to scan each item individually, nor is there a need to demagnetize them separately.
This is not a "security upgrade", but rather "integrating loss prevention into the checkout process". The hardware remains the same, but its position within the process has changed.
The FLEX platform of Sensormatic combines the EAS antenna with a digital advertising screen. The antenna at the entrance detects the goods while the screen displays brand advertisements or promotional information.
One device, two processes. Theft prevention is a function, while advertising generates revenue.

However, the industry leaders are moving towards "intelligentization", and they still need stable hardware to support these functions. The batch of AM antennas sent to Europe in the first half of the year were for a system integration company. What they cared about was whether the detection distance was accurate and whether the remote debugging was stable. Because they had to integrate the antennas into their own systems.
The hardware has been completed, and only then can the subsequent steps be carried out.
